How I Use AI to Support Sustainable Living—Without Losing the Human Touch

Sustainable living can feel overwhelming sometimes—so many materials to compare, products to research, and decisions to make that impact both our health and the planet. But what if the key to simplifying all of that… is a little help from artificial intelligence?

I use AI tools almost every day to support my sustainable lifestyle and home design work. But I’m not handing over my values or my voice. I still believe in thoughtful choices, natural materials, and personal experience. AI simply helps me research faster, write more clearly, and stay organized—so I can focus on what really matters: living well and sharing what I learn with others.

Here’s how I use AI to support sustainable living—without losing the human touch.

AI Helps Me Research Smarter, Not Harder

I’ve always enjoyed learning about healthy homes and eco-friendly building practices, but let’s be honest—research can take a lot of time. With tools like ChatGPT, I can quickly get a breakdown of topics like:

  • What exactly is an ERV system and how does it work in the desert?
  • Is Havelock Wool insulation really better for indoor air quality?
  • What are the pros and cons of Richlite as a kitchen backsplash?

Instead of spending hours combing through articles, I get a clear summary in seconds. Then, I double-check key facts and add my own insight—especially from products we’ve used in our own home.

This has been a game-changer for writing blog posts, comparing materials, and answering questions from readers or friends who are curious about sustainable design.

AI Streamlines My Writing Process

Even as someone who loves to write, I’ve found that staring at a blank page can still be tough—especially when I want to explain something clearly or get the tone just right.

That’s where AI gives me a gentle nudge. I often use ChatGPT to:

  • Outline a blog post from a rough idea
  • Reword something to sound more conversational
  • Summarize complex technical information so it’s easier to understand

Then I go back and shape the draft in my own voice. I add stories from our family’s move to a passive home, design lessons from client projects, and honest opinions on what has or hasn’t worked.

The result? Posts that feel more like a conversation than a lecture—and that actually get published instead of sitting in my drafts folder.

AI Supports My Content Planning & Product Sharing

As I’ve grown my blog and Pinterest account, AI has helped me stay consistent without burning out.

Some ways I’ve used it:

  • Writing Pinterest pin descriptions that are keyword-friendly but still human
  • Drafting product spotlights for items I genuinely use and love
  • Organizing ideas for a new post or series when I have too many tabs open (literally and mentally)
  • Providing step by step instructions to fix problems with WordPress, Canva, and MailPoet

Sustainable living isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress. And AI helps me keep moving forward with less stress and more intention.

Still Rooted in Real Life

Here’s the thing: I don’t use AI to be more robotic. I use it to be more human.

To spend less time formatting and more time outside.
To focus on real conversations with people who care about wellness and design.
To create space for curiosity instead of decision fatigue.

My blog reflects who I am—a designer, a former dietitian, a mom, a lifelong learner. AI is just one of the tools I use to help me share my perspective and connect with others who care about healthier, more sustainable homes.

And if it can make that process a little more joyful and a little less stressful? I’m all in.
