How Well Does Your Home Protect You From Summer Heat?

I recently read an article about heat waves that stayed with me.

Not because of what happens outside, but because of what happens inside.

During some of the world’s deadliest heat waves, many of the victims died inside their own homes—not because they weren’t sheltered, but because the buildings themselves became dangerously hot overnight.

That challenged something I had always assumed.

It also brought me back to our first home in Scottsdale.

Having spent our entire lives in the Midwest, air conditioning had never been something we thought much about. We used it for a couple of months each summer, and even then, only when it was especially hot.

Moving to the desert was a completely different experience.

Our condo had single-pane windows across a western exposure, and during the summer the air conditioner seemed to run constantly. At night, it would cycle on every few minutes, and I often woke to the sound of it blasting through the vents. We eventually replaced the windows with double-pane glass and installed better window coverings, which certainly helped, but the home always felt like it was working hard just to keep up with the heat.

At the time, we assumed that was simply life in the desert. Friends with larger homes talked about having three or four air-conditioning units running all summer, and it almost made that constant battle against the heat seem normal.

Then we found our current townhome.

At first, it honestly sounded a little intimidating. An ERV? A heat pump? Sheep’s wool insulation? It was very different from anything we had owned before.

But the more we learned, the more it made sense.

I had recently completed my kitchen and bath design education and had begun studying healthier materials and high-performance homes. Combined with years of owning and renovating houses, I started to see home performance differently. Instead of asking how powerful the cooling system was, I began asking how well the home itself worked.

That shift changed everything.

For years, I viewed sustainable homes primarily through the lens of environmental impact. Energy efficiency, healthier materials, and lower utility bills all felt like the primary goals. And of course, the positive effect those things can have on our health.

Those things still matter.

But reading about how homes themselves can become dangerous during prolonged heat waves made me realize something had shifted in my thinking.

Sustainability isn’t just about reducing our impact. It’s also about protection—and, ultimately, another way of supporting our health.

The Hidden Risk Inside the Home

One of the most surprising things I learned is how uneven temperatures can be inside a house.

A thermostat on one wall, often on the lower level, can give a false sense of comfort. Meanwhile, other areas—especially upstairs—can be significantly hotter.

The house feels “fine,” but parts of it are not.

That disconnect matters more than we realize.

Holding Cool, Not Just Making It

Before living in our current home, I thought summer comfort was mostly about air conditioning.

Now I understand it differently.

A well-designed home doesn’t just produce cool air. It holds it.

Our insulation, triple-pane windows, and tightly sealed building envelope slow down how quickly heat enters the home. If the power goes out or cooling equipment fails, the house doesn’t immediately spike in temperature.

It changes more slowly, buying valuable time until power is restored or you can safely relocate.

In extreme heat, that resilience matters.

Consistency Across the Whole House

Another difference I’ve noticed is how consistent the temperature feels throughout the home.

Instead of relying on a single thermostat, our system uses sensors across multiple zones. It responds to what’s actually happening in different areas of the house, not just one reading.

Combined with our ERV system, which continuously moves and refreshes the air, the result is a more even, comfortable environment from room to room.

It’s subtle, but over time it becomes one of the things I appreciate most.

Small Interventions That Add Up

In the desert, heat management often comes down to small, consistent decisions.

Lowering shades before the morning sun enters.

Reducing heat gain before it builds.

Letting the home do what it was designed to do.

None of these things are dramatic, but together they reduce how hard the home has to work throughout the day.

The Role of Home in Longevity

There’s a lot of conversation right now about longevity, but rarely do we talk about the role of our homes.

A home that maintains comfortable temperatures, clean, continuously refreshed air, and a lower-stress indoor environment is doing something quietly important.

It’s supporting our health not only in ideal conditions, but especially during challenging ones.

As our climate becomes hotter and heat waves become more common, I think this conversation becomes even more important.

A sustainable home should reduce its impact on the planet.

But perhaps it is also doing something equally important, protecting the people living inside it.
